Yesterday, the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP) warned of a new case of killing protected species, and said that the death of a barn owl must be an alarm for urgent solutions to problems in the field of poaching, improvement of the work of inspection bodies and harmonization of regulations governing the field of hunting.
CZIP said yesterday that, after a call from citizens that an injured owl, a great horned owl (Bubo bubo), was located near the Technical Faculty in Podgorica, they went to the field.
"We found the owl in a very bad condition, while the CT scan showed traces of baleen. The bird was in agony for a long time and its immunity weakened due to the consequences of lead poisoning, so unfortunately there was no way to save it", said the organization.
They added that the bird was shot multiple times.
"As evidenced by the video, which shows traces of two types of weapons, most likely air rifles and shotguns. The great eel is a species protected by law and killing it is strictly prohibited, and a criminal offense has been committed - poaching", the CZIP announced, adding that in the past few years, this important species, in addition to poaching, has been the victim of poisoning and electrocution.
They also recalled other cases of killing protected species in Montenegro.
"Recently, we had a case of a shot pelican from the Ulcinj salt pan, which was recovering with us for a period of time. Thanks to care and great efforts to help the bird, the pelican was recovered and released. However, some other individuals were not so lucky, so the griffon vulture, which was followed by a satellite transmitter from Cres, arrived in Montenegro, where after a few days it became a target of poachers. A large number of cases of killing of protected species must be an alarm for the urgent solution of the problem in the field of poaching, by improving the work of inspection bodies and harmonizing the regulations governing the field of hunting", said the NGO, adding that the analyzes they conducted show that there is almost a complete lack of reaction. authorities when it comes to prosecuting the perpetrators of this criminal act.
"Until that changes, our sky will be a trap for birds," said CZIP
