Diplomas were awarded today in Podgorica to the participants of the II Media Literacy Forum organized by the Center for Civic Education (CEO) as part of the "Media for me!" project, with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Norway and the Balkan Fund for Democracy of the German Marshall Fund of the USA ( BTD).

During the presentation of the diplomas, Development Coordinator at CGO Damir Nikočević emphasized the importance of strengthening media literacy both in the formal and informal educational process.

He pointed out, as reported, the importance of proper reading of the media, suppression of fake news and professional reporting in accordance with ethical standards.

"CGO advocates for a broad introduction of the public to the role of the media and the value framework created by the media, both through the information program they produce and through other forms, with an emphasis on the importance of checking sources and facts, analysis of media content, the functionality of regulation and self-regulation in the media , the influence of advertisers, but also the position of social networks, which are becoming one of the key channels for spreading fake news and misinformation," he said.

Nikočević also said that the five participants of the II Media Literacy Forum will have the opportunity to demonstrate the acquired knowledge and skills through a paid three-month internship in the media and non-governmental organizations that deal with media issues.

CGO states that, during the three-day II Media Literacy Forum, distinguished national and regional lecturers introduced the participants to the concept of media literacy, the role of the media, their value framework and the one created by the media, news as the basic expression of journalism and context as a mandatory segment of journalistic expressions, the position of the editor, the way of conducting the interview. As they add, there were also words about manipulation in the media and culture, the importance of the media for the development of human rights culture, freedom of expression and its limitations, ethics in journalism, the Code of Journalists of Montenegro, sensationalism in the media and advertising monopolies. Through the panel discussion, a review was made on fake news, social networks, verification of data and sources.

The lecturers at the II Media Literacy Forum were: Bozena Jelušić, professor of media literacy and co-author of the curriculum for media literacy, Slavoljub Šćekić, editor-in-chief at the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIN), Petar Komnenić, journalist and author of the show "Nachisto" on TV Vijesti, Nikola Ljuca, director and artistic director of the Montenegrin Human Rights Film Festival UBRZAJ, Siniša Gazivoda, lawyer and expert on freedom of expression, Vesna Rajković Nenadić, journalist and program coordinator at the Media Institute of Montenegro, Srdan Kosović, editor-in-chief daily newspaper Vijesti and Jovana Đurišić, chief and responsible editor of the Pobjeda.me portal.

Forum participants had the opportunity to apply through a competitive process that generated many times more applications than the number of participants expected.
