Call for proposals for the EU Award for Investigative Journalism

The competition for the submission of research papers by journalists from the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey for the awarding of the annual EU award for investigative journalism is open.

Applications can be submitted for research papers published from January 1 to December 31, 2020, which deal with topics in the field of freedom of expression, rule of law, transparency, abuse of power, non-respect of basic human rights and corruption.

The prize fund for Montenegro for 2021 (for achievements in 2020) is 10.000 euros. The first prize is 5.000 euros, the second 3.000 euros, and the third 2.000 euros.

Individuals or groups of journalists, regardless of the journalistic format (print, online, radio and television), have the right to apply for works published or broadcast in the media in Montenegro in official, minority or international languages.

Only stories that were published or broadcast in print media, online, on radio or television during 2020 are eligible for application.

The EU award for investigative journalism in the Western Balkans and Turkey aims to promote the outstanding achievements of investigative journalists, as well as to improve the visibility of quality investigative journalism in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey.

This continues the implementation of the project of EU regional awards for investigative journalism in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey, as well as part of the ongoing project "Raising the quality of news and independent journalism in the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey", which is financed by the European Union.

All involved project partners have broad expertise in the field of media freedom and are recognized locally and internationally as strong independent media organizations.

The jury for the EU Award consists of media experts, some of whom are project partners – BIRN Albania, Tirana, Albania, Center for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro CIN-CG, Podgorica Montenegro, BIRN Hub, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, BIRN Serbia, Belgrade, Serbia, Independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers (SSNM), Skopje, North Macedonia.

Others come from extensive network projects held by members of the project partners, such as editors, members of the academic community, and esteemed journalists.

The deadline for submitting an application is March 31, 2021.

The awards are given annually in all six countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey.
