Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pažin met with representatives of the NGO Center for Women's Rights, initiators of the campaign #Neželjena, which aims to prevent the misuse of medical tests for prenatal gender selection.
"I want to welcome the noble mission of your campaign and express the Government's full support for solving this important social issue. The success of this campaign would undoubtedly mean a step forward in the emancipation of Montenegrin society," said Vice President Pažin.
He assessed that solving such sensitive and complex social issues requires joint action and cooperation of state institutions, the civil sector and citizens.
"I am convinced that with joint efforts we will be able to overcome this problem that penetrates to the very core of our social being. Your energy, professional knowledge and work on raising the awareness of citizens are of great importance on this path," Pažin said.
The Director of the NGO Center for Women's Rights, Maja Raičević, as stated by the Government, announced that she was encouraged by the Government's initiative to hold the meeting even before the process of collecting signatures of support for the Initiative was finalized, which will soon be officially submitted to the Government of Montenegro.
Raičević expressed her hope that from now on, the joint forces of the Government, the civil sector and other social factors, primarily through education, will contribute to overcoming the negative cultural norms that lead to this problem.
Concrete steps were agreed upon in achieving cooperation between the civil and public sectors, with the expectation of support from international organizations, in order to solve this important social issue, both from the aspect of human rights, and in relation to the improvement of the educational and health systems.
