Today, for the umpteenth time in the Montenegrin parliament, the "role" was assigned to the female gender as less valuable, according to a statement by activist Aida Petrović from the Montenegrin Women's Lobby.
She was reacting to today's statement by the representative of the Socialist People's Party (SNP) in the Parliament of Montenegro.
"It is a shameful statement and at the same time unworthy of a deputy as a representative of all citizens of Montenegro, which refers to reproduction and the right to choose the gender of the child," Petrović said.
As she states, with this statement, the head of the SNP parliamentary group, Dragan Ivanović, publicly supported selective abortions, which have been a big problem for Montenegro for a long time, because sex selection results in fewer and fewer female children being born.
"To make matters even worse, the statement of MP Dragan Ivanović in the Montenegrin parliament did not meet with the condemnation of the MPs, but was accepted by silence and non-reaction and thus additionally strengthened: multiple discrimination and the collapse of women's human rights, expressed sexist understanding of the role of female children and the female gender in the family and society in general," Petrović points out.
She states that the declaration of support for selective abortions and the non-reaction of all members of the parliament show a clear attitude of "favoring male patriarchal retrograde principles towards the values of women and female children".
"A "role" has been assigned to the female gender as less valuable, which will come into the world in many cases only if the male head of the family decides to do so," says Petrović.
She said that this statement and the silence on the statement sent a very dangerous and conservative message to young people as future parents, "that choosing the sex of a child is the right of every citizen to influence reproduction and sex".
"Ivanović, who by remaining silent on the inhumane and discriminatory statement all MPs supported and thereby supported selective abortions, should know that all domestic and international legislation stands against all forms of discrimination against women and female children," said Petrović.
"Population policy cannot be conducted over women's lives by humiliating and limiting women's human rights, as an indivisible unit of universal human rights," she concluded.
