Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) in Nikšić polje, as part of phase II of the Perućica hydropower plant (HE) reconstruction and modernization project, is implementing the Opačica and Moštanica canal rehabilitation project, EPCG announced today.
"The Opačica canal brings water from the Slano reservoir, and the Moštanica canal from the Krupac reservoir to the system of canals, tunnels and pipelines and finally to the HPP Perućica turbines," the EPCG press release states.
They reacted to the statement of five NGOs (Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP), Organization KOD, Župa u srcu, Society of Young Ecologists Nikšić and Montenegrin Society of Ecologists) in which they stated that they were "surprised and shocked by the scope of work in the Vrtac field" , Nikšićko polje, where earth is excavated, meadows are deposited and filled, roads are filled and habitats are fragmented".
EPCG said that it is in the process of creating project documentation and that EPCG has also carried out an environmental impact assessment procedure.
"At our request, the Environmental Protection Agency informed us back that an assessment is not required for this type of work. In order to clarify project activities and respect other interested parties, a meeting was held in EPCG with representatives of the non-governmental sector (Center for the Protection and Study of Birds, Župa u srcu, Society of Young Ecologists). It was agreed that they should submit their comments, proposals and suggestions from their fields of activity, which EPCG is ready to consider, however, despite the agreement, we still have not received any material from them. We remind you that the canals were built way back in 1961 and that since then no major reconstruction or rehabilitation has been carried out. The current rehabilitation is being carried out with the aim of ensuring the safe and secure operation of HPP Perućica, reducing water losses from the canal and improving the condition of the canal embankment," EPCG said in a statement.
