The Institute of Public Health (IJZ), in cooperation with the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), will analyze samples to identify the "delta" strain of the coronavirus according to valid procedures and protocols.

As announced by the IJZ, this will be done within the framework of the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing support program for candidate countries or potential candidates for EU membership.

"The time, method and dynamics of sending samples, as well as the place of sample processing, is determined by ECDC in accordance with the requirements of the program," says the announcement.

It is stated that, in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the Robert Koch Institute from Berlin, staff training for this complex method of analyzing the genomes of microorganisms has been started and is being carried out.

"After the completion of the training confirmed by the educator, sequencing will also be done at the Institute," the statement added.
