The National Parks of Montenegro and the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds opposed the hunters' request to stop hunting the stone partridge, an endangered and legally protected species, and asked for a long-term ban on hunting that species.
"We were informed by the hunters that an initiative was recently submitted to your ministry to abolish the hunting of the partridge, which is protected by the ban until the end of 2018. We want to praise your department for implementing the ban initiative, given that the moratorium was justifiably introduced, and to send an appeal, that the arbitrary request of the hunters is not granted, but the profession is consulted, and the ban is extended for another two years, i.e. until the end of 2020," he wrote in the letter to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Milutin Simović.
It is stated that the extension of the moratorium is justified by "the factual situation which undoubtedly points to the fact that the rock partridge is poached".
They claim that fires and droughts have made nesting and raising young more difficult.
It is stated that the importance of the recovery of the population of that species is particularly reflected in the fact that the hunting societies in Herzegovina themselves made the decision to ban the hunting of that species, as well as that in Albania the hunting moratorium was extended for another five years.
The rock partridge is on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals
