Josip Đurašković, the newly appointed director of JP "Regional Waterworks of the Montenegrin Coast" filed a complaint with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the head of the Podgorica Security Center for the illegal exploitation of gravel in the Botun settlement, which threatens the key water source that supplies the Montenegrin coast - Bolje sestre.
As "Vijesti" learns, photos and videos showing who carried out the exploitation were handed over to the police, on the basis of which the police have already reacted.
"Illegal exploitation of gravel, i.e. the uncontrolled removal of gravel layers that represent the protection of the Bolje Sestre karst spring, reduces the protective belt of alluvium around the spring and makes it susceptible to the penetration of possible pollution. Therefore, it is a very important segment in the protection of the spring to prevent the uncontrolled exploitation of gravel," the application states.
They stated that a few days ago, in the afternoon hours, in the Botun settlement, construction machinery used for gravel exploitation was noticed.
The video of the excavator was forwarded to the police, and the report was sent to the Directorate for Inspection Affairs.
The new management of the "Regional Waterworks" immediately launched intensive activities to prevent uncontrolled exploitation of gravel, due to which the yield of the Bolje sestre source was reduced.
The problem of uncontrolled gravel exploitation was recently pointed out by the Minister of Ecology, Spatial Planning and Urbanism, Ratko Mitrović, who stated that in addition to the decrease in the yield of springs and the drop in the water level in the wells of local residents. The yield has thus fallen many times over, from 2660 l/s in August 2005 to 335 l/s in September 2020.
One of the key reasons for the dismissal of the previous director of the Regional Waterworks, Goran Jevrić, which was stated by the president of the board of directors, Zoran Lakušić, was the unconscionable work around the source of Bolje sestre.
"That the yield of the Bolje Sestre source, from which six coastal municipalities are supplied with water for a decade and a half, has been reduced by more than 80 percent. Because he did not undertake activities in accordance with his responsibilities based on the data on the reduction of the yield below the projected capacity of the water supply system and that this situation "represents a serious danger, and that in the tourist season the coast could be without sufficient water. He did not respond adequately to the drastic trend of the decline in the yield of the Bolje sestre water source," said Lakušić in the explanation of Jevrić's dismissal.
The board of directors appointed Đurašković, who prioritized activities related to the preservation of the source of Bolje sestre as a priority in his work.
