This letter is the result of extensive research by the British Council and the not-for-profit social enterprise Catalyst in Communities, which used a mixed-methodology approach, including massive data collection on the attitudes, experiences and aspirations of 8.000 young people from 23 countries.
Aiming for greater representation in terms of gender, origin, location and socio-economic status, the research team worked despite global restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthen the voice of today's young people, who are absent from climate change debates. The research for this report was conducted between January and March 2021.
The key messages and recommendations resulting from this research can be found in the text of this document, in the continuation of the letter itself.
The Global Youth Letter on Climate Action, and the accompanying 8.000 Rising campaign, is an integral part of the British Council's 'The Climate Connection' programme, a global platform for dialogue, collaboration and action, connecting millions of people through shared solutions to the climate crisis.
At the heart of this collaborative approach are young people, as we support them to amplify their voices, acquire skills and create networks to engage in meaningful dialogue, bringing about real change for the benefit of our planet.
We hope that this letter will inspire you to think about your role in the fight against the negative impacts of climate change and motivate you to take action within your means.
