Milovac: Katnić washes his biography, he can't compete against Đukanović

"There is a lot of pressure from the international community and there is already a reaction from the institutions of the European Union. But if previous affairs like 'The Envelope' have shown us anything, it is that Milivoje Katnić does not succumb to public pressure," Milovac said.

Chief Special Prosecutor Milivoje Katnić already had a bunch of evidence against Milo Đukanović and his family, but he did nothing. The express opening of the procedure now is only "washing" one's own biography, and its goal can only be to lower tensions in the public. Katnić cannot act against Đukanović, he told "Nova" Dejan Milovac, director of the Research Center of the Network for the Affirmation of the Non-Governmental Sector (MANS), which announced earlier this week that Đukanović and his son Blažo hid assets in five countries through offshore companies and trust funds.

The Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT), headed by Katnić, opened a case regarding claims by MANS that the president of the state and his son abroad concluded secret contracts on the management of their assets. The SDT announces that it will take "all measures and actions within its competence to determine the facts and circumstances".

Milovac, as one of the researchers who collected data related to Đukanović, believes that Montenegro has finally received an answer to the burning question.

"Disclosed information allows us to untangle the ball and get answers to the question that has been shaking Montenegro for 30 years - where is the property of the Đukanović family. Until now, everything was at the level of daily politics and mutual accusations, and now there is tangible evidence. Đukanović and his family created a business structure that serves to hide assets from the public. This amount of data is a great road map, because no one has been able to get there. The institutions didn't know where to look, we provided them with that starting point, but cooperation with the countries where the Đukanovićs hid their assets is now necessary," said Milovac.

The director of MANS assessed that Katnić will not decide to act against the head of state.

"As soon as we got this information, we were not overly optimistic that the Special State Prosecutor's Office would do something about it. Milivoje Katnić already had a handful of evidence against Milo Đukanović and his family, but he did nothing about them. Katnić always stopped the process and found the culprit on duty, instead of Đukanović. "This express opening of the procedure is just washing the biography, and its goal can only be to lower tensions in the public," Milovac said.

According to him, now only pressure from international institutions can lead to an epilogue that will mark "the end of the concealment of assets" of the Đukanović family.

"This is a job for an independent prosecution, which we lack. Despite the political will that exists now, Montenegro lacks the capacity to form an investigation. I have no illusions whether Milivoje Katnić will harm Milo Đukanović. However, there is great pressure from the international community and there is already a reaction from the institutions of the European Union. But, if previous affairs like the 'Envelope' showed us something, it is that Milivoje Katnić does not succumb to public pressure", concluded the director of MANS.
