The delegation of the European Union, in cooperation with the EU info center, the Municipality of Nikšić and the local NGO sector, organized a tree-planting action on Trebjesa, thus marking Climate Diplomacy Week.
"Symbolically, we are undertaking "actions" which, along with "ambition", are the central themes of the EU's climate diplomacy in 2021. Both ambition and action are what the EU wants to show with its Green Deal - to achieve a reduction in emissions of at least 2030 percent by 55 , as an intermediate step towards the EU goal of climate neutrality by 2050," said the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, Oana Kristina Popa, during the planting.
Together with the President of Nikšić Municipality, Marko Kovačević, and representatives of the local NGO sector, Popa planted the first seedlings.
Over 100 participants gathered to plant fir, cedar and birch seedlings in this area, which was recently affected by forest fires, provided by the EU info center.
"Our message is clear: we care, we can, and we are working - at the EU level and collectively. Montenegro is our partner in this venture. "Climate change is connected with environmental protection, which is also one of the key areas of the accession negotiations," said Popa.
She reminded that the EU helps Montenegro to protect its environment and that it has donated more than 40 million euros to this area in the last 13 years. Popa found out from the conversation with the NGO sector that part of that porska is realized in Nikšić.
The representative of the NGO FORS Montenegro said that his organization is running an EU project through which underground containers for waste, a modern vehicle for waste collection, and all-terrain vehicles for communal police will be procured.
The same NGO organizes workshops with high school students on green economy and green entrepreneurship, as part of another EU-funded project.
"These children are future citizens of the EU. Together with their colleagues from all over Europe, they will contribute to more sustainable economies and prevent the negative effects of climate change," said Popa.
The following participated in the planting campaign: NVU Putevima predaka, JPU Dragan Kovačević, Municipality of Nikšić, Protection and Rescue Service, Alfa Center, Volunteers - Crveni krst NK, JU First Vocational High School, Unified Club - Our Economic School, NVU Youth Power, Youth Association of Montenegro, Bicycling Club Perun, Force Montenegro, Tourist Organization Nikšić, Nvo Razboritost and Urban Greenery of Nikšić.
