We are not lagging behind the world at all, we have had thrombolytic therapy for ten years, and for the last three years we have been applying mechanical extraction (removal) of thrombus, said the director of the Clinical Center of Montenegro Ljiljana Radulović.

On the occasion of October 29 - World Stroke Day, which this year is celebrated under the slogan "Don't stay at home", she said that in their institution world standards are applied in the treatment of this serious disease.

"If patients report on time to KCCG, we apply both of these therapies every day," she added.

Radulović explains that the most common symptoms of a stroke, which appear suddenly, are speech disorder, weakness of one limb and balance disorder

"These are exactly the main symptoms that are insisted on as crucial everywhere in the world and that have the abbreviation in English "FAST", precisely wanting to point out that we should be quick to reach a health facility that is capable of providing adequate treatment for stroke" said Radulović and added that it is also an abbreviation of the most common symptoms of a stroke.

She explained that time is a key factor in the treatment of stroke, that is, quick recognition of the first symptoms and reporting to the nearest health facility. For the application of thrombolytic therapy, the gold standard is the first four and a half hours from the appearance of the first symptoms, that is, six hours for the application of mechanical thrombus removal.

"Since mechanical thrombus extraction is only done at KCCG, one of the good things about the proximity of all other hospitals in Montenegro is that patients from other hospitals can be transported to KCCG in six hours, where they can also undergo mechanical thrombus extraction. With both therapies, we have strict indications for application, but in order for the patient to be a candidate for that therapy, he must arrive on time, at least three hours after the onset of symptoms, so that we can apply one or the other therapy," Radulović points out.

Neurologists emphasize the important role of prevention in the fight against this disease

The director of the KCCG Neurology Clinic, Slaviša Peruničić, emphasizing the importance of prevention, said that stroke is the third leading cause of death in the world, and that due to the degree of disability it leaves, it also affects the economic and financial standard, not only of families, but also of society as a whole. .

"Stroke is a catastrophic disease, because it is the third leading cause of death in the world, including in Montenegro, after oncological and cardiovascular diseases. A stroke leaves permanent consequences in terms of the degree of disability, and it also affects the economic and financial situation, both in the treatment of patients and in the later period in the rehabilitation treatment of stroke patients. Looking at the conscious parameters, our parameters do not differ significantly in terms of the incidence of stroke. It is considered that this number is 50-100 on the annual level in the territory of Montenegro," he said.

Doctors point out that prevention is very important and urge us to act on risk factors that we can influence, namely regular physical activities, regular control of blood sugar and cholesterol levels, blood pressure, use of tobacco products and alcohol, as well as body weight control .

They also state that there are risk factors that we cannot influence, namely age, race and genetics.

Today, the Clinic for Neurology of the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG) marked World Stroke Day with health-preventive activities. The Clinic's doctors and nurses check blood sugar levels, blood pressure and give advice and promotional material on stroke prevention to interested citizens.
