The Environmental Protection Agency of Montenegro, in cooperation with the Electric Power Company of Montenegro (EPCG), has started setting up five stork nesting platforms in Nikšić.

"The Nikšić field is one of the most important places for birds in the country. In addition to the Bojana delta, Lake Skadar, high mountains and the valley of the Zeta River, it represents one of the main migratory corridors in Montenegro. It is especially interesting during the spring migration, where for the ornitofauna, very exotic birds land and rest during their return from Africa to their final destinations. These are primarily cranes, but there are also other species, such as storks," the ornithologist told "Vijesti". Darko Saveljic.

He reminded that nests are made on the roofs of houses, as well as on artificial platforms.

"We have agreed with Elektroprivreda to set up several artificial nests and to try to encourage them to start nesting in Montenegro, given that we only have one pair and that is in Polimska Street in Berane. All countries in the surrounding area and most European countries have a very large number of storks, and Montenegro has only that one pair. These are some of the efforts to improve the birdlife of Montenegro", said Saveljić.

At the end of the 19th century, the famous Austrian ornithologist Othmar Reiser recorded as many as 60 nests of white storks in the vicinity of Ulcinj, along the Bojana River, and in the same period observed them in the vicinity of Lake Skadar.

According to Saveljić, the Nikšić field, in addition to being interesting for birds, is also interesting in a geological sense because it is the field with the richest water in the Dinarides.

"It has swamp vegetation of plants that are of special interest for protection at the level of the European Union," said the ornithologist.

He added that until now, Nikšić has been the city of Šobić, Bedem and Lake Fest, the city of beer, and if they succeed, it will also be the city of stork.

The stork is a migratory species, and it usually returns from Africa in late March or early April. It builds one of the largest and heaviest nests. Once she makes a nest, she returns to it for years, adding to it each time, so they often reach a diameter of more than two meters. Such a nest, especially during the winter months, is often a hiding place for a large number of small birds, which is why they are called "bird cities".
