The European Union (EU) expects all members of the Prosecutorial Council to act consistently, in order to preserve the independence of the state prosecution, which includes respect for the principles of political neutrality and professionalism, and the prevention of any inappropriate political influence on the Council, said the head of the EU delegation in Montenegro. Oana Kristina Popa in a letter sent to acting (acting) Supreme State Prosecutor (VDT) Dražen Burić.
This is stated in the statement published on the website of the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office.
Popa said in the letter that in the Annual Report of the European Commission (EC) on Montenegro, it was pointed out that the amendments to the Law on State Prosecution, which entered into force in June 2021, did not fully respond to the recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding the risks of politicization of the Prosecutor's Office advice.
"We will continue to cooperate with the Montenegrin authorities and call on them to resolve all remaining issues as a matter of priority, as emphasized in the subsequent opinion of the Venice Commission on amendments to the Law on the State Prosecutor's Office," stated Popa.
According to Popa, it is necessary for Montenegro to make further progress in the rule of law reforms in order to continue moving forward on its path to the EU and meet the temporary benchmarks under Chapter 23.
"Be sure that the EU Delegation in Montenegro will continue to monitor the work of the Prosecutor's Council within the framework of accession negotiations," Popa said in a letter to Burić.
