Locals of Bogetići and the Pešivac area will organize a protest rally in Bogetići at ten o'clock due to the announcement of the Nikšić local administration that a regional recycling center for eight municipalities will be built in Stubica.
Locals claim that the planned construction of the center is in the immediate vicinity of a populated area where hundreds of families live permanently, which, according to them, would threaten the right to a healthy environment. As they pointed out, they learned about the construction of the regional recycling center from the media, and no one consulted them on that occasion.
"The residents of this region are not aware of the engaged experts who chose this very location for the construction of the mentioned project, nor are they aware of the criteria on the basis of which the location was chosen," the residents' letter states.
As the letter states, they submitted a petition to the local government with 500 signatures of locals who oppose the idea of building a temporary regional landfill and a regional recycling center at the mentioned location, because they believe that it will have lasting consequences for the life of the people in the area.
"We strongly support the idea of solving the problem of illegal and inadequate waste disposal, but we believe that there are many uninhabited areas throughout Montenegro, where this project could be implemented, without jeopardizing the existential issue of the population and their right to a healthy environment," the letter says.
The local administration previously announced that this year they will start building a regional recycling center in accordance with all ecological and European standards, and that the location in Stubica, which is about 8,5 kilometers from the center of Nikšić, was ranked the best.
The construction of the recycling center would, according to their residents, finally solve the biggest environmental problem in the town under Trebjes - the illegal landfill Mislov do would be closed and rehabilitated.
It is planned that the recycling center will process waste from eight municipalities - Nikšić, Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat, Budva, Plužine, Šavnik and Žabljak.
