Democratic Montenegro MP Tamara Vujović said that it is devastating for the whole society that women take their lives, that femicide is a constant that is becoming our horrible normality, and that institutions and individuals who are in decision-making positions have a passive attitude towards it.
Vujović reacted to the information that the twenty-seven-year-old NZ died as a result of domestic violence in the Clinical Center of Montenegro, and that her injuries were caused by her unmarried husband.
She also pointed out that upon the news that there has been another murder in Montenegro, that we have another victim of gender-based and family violence, what we need to do is to take responsibility as a society, as a community united for good, and that it is not enough to just harsh condemnation, while passivity is inadmissible.
"We will also notice that the media often approach this topic sensationally. Without the intention of pointing fingers at individuals, without the desire to condemn officials, we emphasize that it is necessary to determine who is guilty and who is responsible, with the awareness that "we are all guilty of everything, and I am more than others" and that we must finally, decisively admit that as a society we have reached the bottom and that we must finally change our approach", stated Vujović in her statement.
The Democrat MP also believes that unstable political conditions for too long, poverty and unemployment have caused the increase in family violence, and violence in general.
The brakes failed a long time ago, she adds, and reality proves that.
"It must and can only be answered by a general social agreement devoid of interest approach and political overreach: stability, salary increase, socio-economic reforms, but also education and close cooperation with the non-governmental sector that deals with these issues," she said.
According to her, education is also necessary, as she says, it is both the foundation and the key, and it is necessary to influence the cause because "this is not the problem of an individual, it is not the problem of one family, one party. This is the problem of all of us, who have to work together solve".
"Democratic Montenegro is deeply aware of the fact that the economic independence of women is one of the most important steps on the way to their empowerment, and that is why we worked on economic reforms. By introducing child allowances and benefits for mothers, by increasing salaries and pensions, we influenced the financial situation to change for the better. We also initiated favorable changes for single parents, which concern alimony, also an important issue that affects the lives of women and children," said Vujović.
They believe that this murder is another warning, a tragic warning "to return to the path of reform, to turn to the citizens and their needs".
"It is high time to do what we started and what the citizens asked us to do; reforms, a fundamental change in the value system, strengthening of institutions and protection of women's human rights," stated Vujović.
They appealed to the society and all actors of social and political life that it is the last moment to call to our senses and start doing things that must be done, "and which are the only way to heal this society of ours".
