When creating insurance rates, actuaries around the world have to build numerous complex models using GLM/GAMM techniques. For each insurance risk that must be predicted, the expected number of losses ("loss frequency") and the average amount of losses ("loss severity") are formed separately.

The most complex models have hundreds of transformations and features, so questions always arise: have we found the most relevant model? Or how much is still unexplained by the existing model compared to the best possible model?

UNIQA 4WARD for this competition provides the entire data set and GLM model effects (as one of the variables). The data set that will be used for the analysis will be available on the Github page, and the link will be published on UNIQA 4WARD website at the start of the challenge on March 1, 2022, along with the entry form.

The participants' task is to propose an XAI-class model, which has better performance than the existing GLM model. The proposed model should be accurate and explain its predictions (by observation).

Who can participate?

All interested persons can join the challenge: individually or in groups. For all group applications, the maximum number of registered persons is three. All participants who compete must be enrolled in a university within a European university with a valid university e-mail address or have valid proof of being a student and not over 30 years old on the day of registration for the competition.

All other participants who are over 30 years of age and/or do not have a valid e-mail address (or proof of current study) of a European university are welcome to participate in the challenge, but are not in competition for cash prizes.

How can you participate?

You can find a detailed description (main goal, rules of participation, conditions for submission, analysis evaluation, awards, etc.). HERE.

What are the rewards?

The first three places among participants who meet all the specific conditions will be awarded cash prizes:

  • first place 1500 euros;
  • another 1000 euros;
  • third with 500 euros.

Additionally, participants with the most predictive model (the first evaluation criterion) will be awarded a trip for two to the WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2022 in Berlin, which includes:

  • two tickets for the congress in the period from June 14 to 15, 2022;
  • an economy class plane ticket, or a train ticket, depending on the winner's place of residence;
  • two nights in a 4-star hotel (double room), with breakfast included.

For all participants competing for one of the prizes, the UNIQA 4WARD organizing team will, at the end of the competition, check the applications and inform only those participants who will be qualified to participate.

Applications for the competition can be sent in the period from March 1 to March 31, 2022. Before submitting your application, be sure to read the competition rules.
