Happy International Women's Day and Women's History Month!
During the month of March, Balkansmedia.org will present and celebrate just a few of the millions of women in the media who break down barriers every day and pave the way for younger generations of female journalists and media workers.
USAID's Balkan Media Assistance Program (BMAP), implemented by Internews in partnership with FHI 360, has the special pleasure of being able to boast of cooperation with great journalists, editors and media directors across the Balkans.
We decided to team up with the illustrator Lejla Ahmedspahić, one of the illustrators who also worked on the #WomenBiH project, and create 6 illustrations for 6 incredible media workers in the Balkans in order to introduce you to women in the media and beyond your countries and to give hope to younger generations of media workers that they are not alone, that they have support and that they have foundations from which they can start.
One of the bad sides of history is that women who changed the world are constantly erased from it, but our goal, like the goal of many others, is to remember, write and remind the heroines of both the past and the time in which we live.
We also remember the first BiH. journalist Milena Mrazović, Albanian-American journalist Nexhmia Zaimi, Montenegrin journalist Zaga Berkuljan, Macedonian journalist Veselinka Malinska as well as Serbian journalist Nada Marinković.
Women in the Balkans are most often found in the role of journalists, and very rarely in the roles of directors, chief editors and members of media management structures.
We want to introduce you to women who, bravely like those before them, are erasing boundaries and shaping some new norms of media activity in the region.
