In order to encourage farmers to efficiently manage the waste generated on their properties and produce compost, organic fertilizer with a high humus content, the Society of Young Ecologists Nikšić (DMEN) handed over five electric shredders to selected agricultural producers from the territory of the municipality of Nikšić.

"By distributing five electric shredders to ten farmers, we wanted to encourage solidarity among farmers, so one shredder will be used by two agricultural producers. This will achieve the greatest possible utilization of these devices, which are used seasonally and which in a short time can process large quantities of branches, up to four centimeters thick, as well as other residues from production", said DMEN.

During the meeting, they presented the working method and basic characteristics of the crushers to the group of farmers, who were chosen as the target group of the project.

Ecologists pointed out that compost has both economic and ecological value, as well as that waste from agricultural estates is in many cases disposed of in an environmentally unacceptable way and that it is one of the causes of the creation of illegal landfills.

"In this part of the year, farmers are preparing gardens and orchards for the new season, so waste is most often destroyed by burning, which has negative consequences for air quality and the environment in general. In addition, plant waste that is created during the implementation of agrotechnical measures and that is improperly disposed of, can contribute to the spread of harmful organisms and thus affect the quality of the next year's products," Nikšić ecologists state.

Therefore, as stated in the press release, it is necessary to develop sustainable methods with the help of modern technologies in order to solve the long-term problem of the existence, elimination, and growth of the mentioned type of waste.

Procurement and distribution of electric shredders is the final activity of the project "Management of plant waste in an ecologically and economically acceptable way", which was financed by the Directorate for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs in a public competition for the distribution of funds to non-governmental organizations.
