The Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG) has introduced a new method of cardiac surgery, they said from that institution, adding that it is an invasive video-assisted surgery that is carried out in a dozen other European health institutions.

KCCG said that, in cooperation with colleagues from Vicenza, three cardiac surgery patients were operated on in that institution since Saturday, and that two more will undergo the procedure today.

Director of the Center for Cardiac Surgery Srđan Pavićević said that this is the most modern, painless and best way of caring for cardiac surgery patients.

"The trauma is so minimal that it is simply fascinating to watch a patient who wakes up very quickly after this operation, becomes active and leaves the hospital," said Pavićević.

He noted that not every cardiac surgery patient is a candidate for this type of intervention, adding that not every heart operation can be solved in this way, but only certain cases.

According to Pavićević, it is a surgery that has very specific and narrow indications.

"These are primarily changes on the valves, on the aortic valve, mitral valve, possibly tumors of the atrium, possible defects of the wall, atrial walls or ventricular walls. However, bypass, for example, as the most common operation, cannot be solved in this way," said Pavićević.

He explained that the decision on whether to perform a standard cardiac surgical procedure or a mini-invasive video-assisted surgery is made by the surgeon.

As it was announced, cardio surgeon Olivera Rašović, who works in one of the leading and reference houses for mini-invasive video-assisted surgery, San Bortolo from Vicenza, is responsible for the introduction of this method in KCCG.

She performed the first operations at KCCG, with colleagues from Italy, while the next ones will be performed jointly so that, after some time and around a hundred operations have been performed, teams of KCCG doctors could start performing them routinely and independently.

"I insisted and I stand by the fact that this school must be set up so that everyone is familiar with it. All my colleagues, cardiac surgeons, cardioanesthesiologists and cardiologists must adopt this procedure as a basic surgical and medical concept", said Pavićević.

He stated that he hopes that in a year to a year and a half, when it will be completely independent, this procedure will be competitive in the market of modern medicine and cardiac surgery both in the region and in Europe.

"I believe that we can be leaders again, as we were 20 years ago," said Pavićević.

He noted that, thanks to Rašović, all operations and training in KCCG by Italian colleagues are done free of charge.
