For the cutting of trees in the urban part of Kolašin, on privately owned plots, it should not be the responsibility of the Forestry Administration alone, and decisions about cutting should be made with much more care.

This was announced by the NGO "Natura", commenting on the day before yesterday's cutting down of several fir trees in front of a residential building in the narrowest part of the city.

They remind that the municipal commission is responsible only for public areas.

"There is a legal gap here, because it is assumed that no one is competent on city construction land that is privately owned. Some authority should be determined, because it is a city area, so you have to take care of the cutting of trees. Also, care should be taken to ensure that trees growing in densely populated areas are not allowed to grow too high," said director Mikan Medenica.

He says that they will try to solve the problem of "legal vacuum", and to use the practice from other cities, in order to more precisely define who should make decisions about cutting down trees.

"We will start the story about the greenery that is located in the city part on private property. Someone has to report to the authorities. The decision about which tree is a danger and which is not should be made by a team of people from different professions. We must no longer allow similar situations, because it may happen that some extremely valuable tree is also cut down".
