The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Montenegro announced three days ago that 44 properties of 34 Russian citizens who had previously been sanctioned were frozen.

"Vijesti" from the Government of Montenegro learns that the list is not final and data for more municipalities is expected.

According to the same information, properties have been frozen for Russian citizens in Herceg Novi, Budva and Žabljak.

The Director of the MANS Research Center, Dejan Milovac, told Vijesti that the organization expects the competent ministries to continue fulfilling international obligations regarding the application of sanctions due to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

"What will certainly represent a special challenge is that, very likely, a certain number of real estate and other assets in Montenegro (vehicles, yachts, companies) are not registered as personal property of persons on the list of EU and US sanctions, but that the real ownership is hidden behind some of numerous offshore companies through which real estate has been purchased in Montenegro for years. Such property must also be the subject of special attention due to the origin of the capital with which it was purchased in Montenegro, and a detailed investigation, if they decide to do it, should also show who for years enabled questionable Russian (and other) capital to enter Montenegro unhindered," Milovac said.

He also said that because of this, this process of freezing the assets of Russian citizens who are linked to the war in Ukraine "can be an excellent start for 'cleaning your own backyard', if there is political will for such a thing".
