The Association of Surgeons of Montenegro is organizing the First International Symposium dedicated to the problem of diagnosis and treatment of liver tumors, which will be held in Bečići from today until October 22.
The Association of Surgeons announced that the aim of the symposium, which will be attended by six professors from the region - Slovenia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, is for them and colleagues from other specialties to "hear and adopt the latest views and recommendations on diagnostics and certain treatment modalities of liver tumors".
"Benign liver tumors are rare, they are most often discovered accidentally, and only some of them, due to complications such as bleeding and a clearly defined malignant potential, require active monitoring and timely minimally invasive radiological or surgical treatment. On the other hand, malignant liver tumors are in 6th place in terms of frequency in the world and are the second leading cause of death in oncology patients of the digestive tract. They represent a major health problem, as over 750.000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the world, most often in an advanced stage of the disease. Projections are that by 2025, the number of patients will exceed 1 million on the planet. Epidemiological data from the United States of America (USA) indicate that primary malignant liver tumors are the fastest growing cause of death in this millennium. These worrying data are the reason that at the upcoming symposium we will clearly define and point out the risk factors, the diagnostic palette and multidisciplinary treatment modalities", according to the announcement of the President of the Association of Surgeons of Montenegro. Veselin Stanišića.
