There is no justification for remembering people with disabilities (PWD) only on December 3, while the rest of the year we do not pay enough attention to this category of population. This practice must change, and the state must stand behind each of its citizens, announced the President of the Assembly, Danijela Đurović.
She said this on the occasion of December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The position of people with disabilities in Montenegro is far from good, and decision-makers and society as a whole must take concrete measures in order to solve the problems of this category of population as soon as possible, according to the press release of the president's office.
"Unfortunately, the fact is that in our society there are complex and numerous obstacles and difficulties that PWDs face and struggle with every day," Đurović pointed out.
Đurović adds that although we are making progress in certain areas, we have made little progress in the process of improving the status of persons with disabilities, and that there are still numerous physical, legislative, and institutional barriers.
"One of the examples is the fact that at the end of June this year there were 9.973 unemployed people with disabilities on the records of the Employment Agency, which is about 22 percent of the total number of unemployed in that period," Đurović emphasized.
As he says, "we must fight to achieve an inclusive and barrier-free society for all PWDs".
He points out that, "we must all continue with continuous work that will break down the obstacles faced by people with disabilities, fight for the full application of their guaranteed rights, develop their opportunities and potentials and not allow them to feel marginalized and out of social events".
"It is not only our obligation on the way to the European Union, but also a way to show basic respect for human rights, as well as to show our humane side and willingness to systematically help our fellow citizens," Đurović concluded.
