The "Sloboda" memorial complex on Jasikovac in Berane was awarded the status of a cultural asset of national importance.
The decision on this matter was awaited for ten years, and it was brought by the Administration for the Protection of Cultural Properties in December last year.
"The initiative to grant this status was taken into consideration back in 2013, and since then we have been waiting for this solution. We forwarded the request to the Administration several times, so I would like to emphasize that we are grateful to the current Director of the Protection Administration who insisted on coming to this," the director of the Polim Museum told "Vijesta" Violeta Folić.
When asked what this will mean for the cultural heritage of Beran, Folić states that it has primarily increased the importance of that complex, and that this solution implies that the state now has control over this cultural asset.
Therefore, she adds, the state has an obligation to invest certain funds in its maintenance and promotion, mainly through the "Program for the Protection and Maintenance of Cultural Heritage".
The plan is to arrange the area around Jasikovac, and Folić explains that the funds for the preparation of the arrangement project have already been approved by the Ministry of Culture for the Municipality of Berane, but also that the Municipality has provided part of the money.
According to her, a tender for the conceptual solution will soon be announced, followed by the development of the project.
"This year, funds for the implementation of the project in the amount of 300.000 euros were received from the Ministry of Culture, and we plan to finish the project by July, and then implement it," she stressed.
The arrangement of the area around Jasikovac itself will be specified by the project, for which he will receive guidelines from the Administration.
"The arrangement of the complex and the total park area will include: fencing, construction of parking spaces, arrangement of paths, certain sports fields, arrangement of horticulture, as well as the construction of a building (restaurant). Admittedly, all this will be specified in more detail by the project", explained Folić.
Jasikovac Hill is located one kilometer from the city. According to historical data, after the battles on Rudeš in 1862, the Turks built their military fortifications in that place and only occasionally moved to the left bank of Lim to appease the rebellious population.
The monument on Jasikovac is one of the symbols of Beran, and it is a symbol of the struggle for liberation that took place in that region during the Balkan, First and Second World Wars.
The Freedom Monument was erected in 1977 and is 18 meters high, while the park area of the memorial complex covers 24 hectares.
It is in the shape of a coupe and resembles a bullet or bullet. Around the compartment are arranged forty large blocks of polished granite on which there are inscriptions and ornaments. Two hundred and fifty square meters of ornamentation were carved and 10.000 letters were written, which tell about the history of this region.
The monument is the work of a famous architect Bogdan Bogdanović and is a symbol of the struggle for liberation that took place in this region during the Balkan, First and Second World Wars.
The monument was erected at the place where the German occupiers shot Beran patriots on July 17, 1941.
The Jasikovac memorial complex and the park area form a whole with a paved staircase, walkways and passages that lead to the central part of the monument, designed as an amphitheater.
The park on Jasikovac is also a favorite picnic spot for the people of Beran, and a place from which the best view of the entire city can be seen.
