The National Computer Security Incident Response Center (CIRT) announced that cyber attacks are possible during the upcoming elections and that they will take all measures within their jurisdiction to prevent possible attacks, in coordination with state institutions, the private sector and international partners.
They indicate that there is a noticeable trend of growth of DDoS attacks during important political events in our region, but also at the global level. Accordingly, they point out, it is necessary to additionally increase the level of service protection in state institutions, media houses, as well as in organizations that deal with monitoring election processes.
A DDoS attack (Distributed Denial of Service) aims to prevent end users from using a certain service (access to a web portal, monitoring election results, etc.) by sending a large number of requests. Such hacker attacks are a frequently used tool by those who do not want certain content to reach the general public, notes CIRT.
"As for the consequences, they are not one of the most dangerous. The biggest consequences can be attacks such as sophisticated malware whose ultimate goal is to steal digital identity data, and often money," the statement added.
They said that CIRT, in addition to responding to incidents, also acts preventively, by educating users and publishing security warnings and advice.
"Absolute security from cyber attacks does not exist in any country in the world, including in Montenegro, however, we strive to make the systems as resistant as possible to cyber attacks. During the upcoming elections, CIRT will take all measures within its competence to coordinate with state institutions , the private sector and international partners to prevent potential DDoS attacks," the announcement concludes.
