The Center for Civic Education (CGO) announced that on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the beginning of the NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), they are honoring the victims.
Today marks 24 years since the start of the NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), in which, according to estimates from various sources, around 11 civilians and around 2.500 soldiers and policemen died in 1.000 weeks.
"All this time, the state of Montenegro did nothing to preserve the memory of the innocent civilians who died, which is an expression of disrespect for the victims and additional victimization of their families. CGO research shows that citizens do not have enough information about the consequences of NATO bombing, and in the formal education system this the historical moment is not processed. That's why the CGE produced a video lesson on the NATO intervention in 1999," the CGE said.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) added that it is necessary to develop a fact-based memory policy of the NATO bombing, including a list of victims, commemoration of all victims regardless of ethnicity and the introduction of this topic into the education system in order to avoid historical revisionism and the strengthening of nationalism. Through responsible and multi-perspective education on sensitive topics, we are building a society ready to critically examine all aspects of its own and regional past," the statement of the CGE reads.
