As Vuković says, the freedom we enjoy today came from their wounds.

After 78 years since the victory over fascism, we are still continuing the path that was left to us as a legacy, and it is the duty of young people to continue and nurture the ideal of justice and love of freedom," stated Tošić in her congratulatory message.

"May 9 is the date that symbolizes the collapse of the greatest evil in the history of mankind. It is also the day when we must remember those who first recognized the evil that was the occupation of our country by the Axis Powers. The first significant uprising in enslaved Europe took place in Montenegro. "The general uprising, courage and determination of the convinced libertarian people of Montenegro raised the faltering morale and set an example for all European nations. Those values that our ancestors forged in battle are still of the greatest importance for our people today," Vučinić pointed out.

Bosniak: Montenegro made a great contribution to the affirmation of the fundamental values of the EU

The Vice-President of the Assembly Branka Bošnjak said that Montenegro, although a geographically small country, "through a long historical continuum, with considerable sacrifices in the Second World War in the fight against fascism, with its brave and courageous example and actions", made a great contribution to the affirmation of the fundamental values of the European Union, in which he clearly recognizes his future.

"It is no coincidence that two major historical milestones are linked to the same day, May 9, Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day. The first is symbolically linked to the first steps in the creation of the EU, and the second to the defeat of the Nazi ideology, which is a clear message that only in unity, tolerance, cultural and national diversity and cooperation can a constructive society and political entity as we recognize today in the EU be built.

"On the other hand, this day both warns us and reminds us of everything that preceded the victory over fascism in the Second World War and that wrote the gray pages of history in which millions of human victims, millions of opportunities, gifts and will to live disappear with cold statistics. of one's daughters, sons, fathers, mothers, friends, children... That is why it is important not to forget historical messages and their true meanings, not to forget what we had to learn through suffering, suffering, blood and pain and to build the future of the EU , in which we undoubtedly see our way, striving for the ideals of good, pacifism, political pluralism, interethnic and intercultural tolerance and unity, democracy. To fight against the scourge of violence, dictatorship, centralism, radical authoritarian nationalism, chauvinism, extremism and all those deviant social and ideological phenomena that in the end always turn into cyclops that mercilessly take human lives. Let's fight for the ideals of a refined man and society, science, culture, art, but also a society of the rule of law and social justice, better economic opportunities and well-being.

"Montenegro, both in its current and in its historical code, aspires to the values of the EU. Although a geographically small country, through a long historical continuum, it made a great contribution to the considerable sacrifices in the Second World War in the fight against fascism, with its brave and courageous example and actions affirmation of the fundamental values of the EU, in which it unequivocally recognizes its future. Therefore, on behalf of the Parliament of Montenegro, and on my own behalf, I congratulate May 9, the Day of Victory over Fascism and the Day of Europe, with the wish that these great dates will always be our pride, symbolic a landmark in our political and ideological aspirations, but also an unforgettable dark historical chapter, a reminder in times of challenges to step bravely and uncompromisingly in the face of true values, with hope, faith and optimism," said the Vice-President of the Assembly.

Šehović: Resist attacks on key foreign policy priorities

The leader of the Social Democrats, Damir Šehović, said that Montenegro must resist attacks on its key foreign policy priorities, which, as he said, will especially strengthen in the coming period.

"Today, the world celebrates one of the most famous and important dates, the Victory over Fascism Day, in order to remind the millions of victims of a terrible ideology, and therefore the fact that the issue of ideology is actually a question of elementary values on which the individual, politics and the state rest.

"This day also reminds us that the truth long ago drew a line between those who were on the right and those who were on the wrong side of history. Not allowing that line to be blurred, criminal acts and ideologies to experience revisionism, and individuals to be rehabilitated, is the question personal honor, as well as an understanding of the practical dangers of such attacks on history.

"Precisely on the idea of unity around true values instead of division, we are welcoming another most important date, Europe Day. Schuman's declaration showed the world the wisdom of economic and other forms of rapprochement, as a superior policy compared to disuniting, violent and renegade ones.

"Montenegro, which is being convinced at every step of the way of alternatives to the European path, which has no alternative, must now be especially reminded of the superiority of that policy. Therefore, we must resist attacks on our key foreign policy priorities, which will especially strengthen in the coming period.

"That's why I congratulate the citizens of Montenegro on Victory Day and Europe Day, which should be a reason for celebration, but also a kind of warning," announced Šehović.

Đurašković: Committed to working towards fulfilling the conditions for EU membership

With its centuries-old struggle for freedom, Cetinje, as a bastion of civic Montenegro, amazed the world as the first place where a nationwide uprising against fascism and Nazism was raised in the territory of enslaved Europe, thereby lighting the torch of freedom in defense of the universal values of anti-fascism, said the mayor of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković in congratulations to citizens on the occasion of Europe Day and Victory over Fascism Day.

Today with special reverence we also remember the millions of victims, all those heroines and heroes who, in the name of defending humanity and basic civilizational values, built their lives into the foundations of modern Europe.

"I am convinced that respecting the human rights, dignity and freedom of each individual, we will work dedicatedly to fulfill the conditions for successful accession to the most prosperous community of states, preserving our anti-fascist heritage as a set of progressive ideas and values.

"In that name, taking into account solidarity, equality and the aspiration to preserve the peace and prosperity of our country as a future member of the European family of nations, I once again congratulate you on one of the most significant dates in European and world history," he said in his congratulatory message.

"And this year, we celebrate Victory Day - a date that is engraved in our being as a signpost and a monument of our man's patriotism and love for his homeland. It is part of our tradition and national identity.

"This is a day without special and big words, but also a warning for the generations to come that nothing like this will ever happen again. It is our duty to respect, nurture and preserve from oblivion the heritage that we inherited from those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom and against fascism. The memory of those who laid down their lives defending this barren land of ours gives us the strength to continue creating a better society, to make our country more beautiful, the future happier.

"In recent history, today's date is also the cornerstone of the united European family of nations and states, which has been officially celebrated as Europe Day since 1986. The European Union was conceived from the beginning as a project of reconciliation and unification in Europe for all citizens who believe in the values of freedom and democracy, justice and equality, human and civil rights, freedom of expression and freedom of the media, the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

"Unfortunately, this year, we welcome this important date filled with pain and disbelief due to the tragic events that happened in Serbia, so we have an obligation to turn even more to true values. Right now, we all need to be united in common messages, activities and values. We must all together defend true and human values - freedom, democracy, security, human rights and fight against intolerance and hatred. Because each of us bears a great burden of responsibility before future generations.

"I am convinced that the citizens of Montenegro will continue to inherit and respect the rights and freedoms of every individual, equality, the rule of law and democracy, as European values and that we will all continue to work together to fulfill the conditions that will enable our successful accession to the European family of nations." , stated Joković.

"Inheriting anti-fascism as one of the fundamental social values, Podgorica and Montenegro are celebrating Europe Day today together with all other European cities and nations, determined to cover the rest of the road to full membership in the European Union as soon as possible. The Assembly of the Capital City, within its competences, will give full contribution to reach that goal as soon as possible," she stated.

Day of Victory over Fascism and Day of Europe

Germany's unconditional capitulation was signed in Berlin a little after midnight on May 8, 1945 by Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, the signatory on behalf of the Soviet Union was Marshal Georgy Zhukov, and on behalf of the Western Allies, British Air Force General Arthur Tedder.

This formally ended the Second World War in Europe, but the remnants of German troops and their allies continued to resist for several days, while in Yugoslavia it lasted until May 15.

The date that represents the official end of the Second World War is September 2, when Japan signed the capitulation on the American battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay after dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In a war that lasted a little less than six years, 61 countries and about 110 million soldiers were involved.

Estimates speak of 50 to 80 million dead, of which between 38 and 55 million were civilians.

The State Commission of the former Yugoslavia once announced that 1.706.000 people died in the war, among them more than 300.000 soldiers.

The 1950th of May is also celebrated as Europe Day, since on that day in 1991, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, published a declaration calling for the establishment of a new order without conflicts among European countries. The following year, the European Commission for Coal and Steel was established, which later grew into the European Economic Community, and in XNUMX, the European Union was proclaimed in Maastricht.

In Milan, in 1955, it was decided that May 9 would be celebrated as Europe Day.

Popović: The two strongest foundations of Montenegro are European and anti-fascist values

Montenegro, with its centuries-old tradition of freedom and fraternity among all differences, which are our greatest wealth, has always been able to strongly defend an open society in which there is room for everyone.

Andrija Popović, president of the Liberal Party, said this on the occasion of Victory Day and Europe Day.

"The great sacrifices of our people made in the fight against evil and hatred oblige us and all generations to hold firmly to such ideas, respecting the glorious tradition of our ancestors and building a better society for the future of new generations," the LP website states.

United Europe is a concept, he added, that brought decades of peace to our continent, but also the greatest prosperity, progress and dignified human life to all the nations of Europe.

"That is why we do not give up on promoting and adopting European values and full membership of Montenegro in the EU family of European nations," said Popović.

The evil of fascism, extremism and hatred never sleeps, he said, adding that vigilance is important at all times, to recognize such disastrous phenomena in time, clearly point to them and openly oppose them.

"We will always be steadfast fighters on such a path for Montenegro and its citizens," Popović wrote.
