The Association of Professional Journalists (DPNCG) said that they note with regret that 19 years after the murder of the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Dan" Duško Jovanović, justice has not been served for his family, colleagues and friends and that freedom of expression in Montenegro still remains under the stain those tragedies.

Duško Jovanović was killed by shots from an automatic weapon on May 27, 2004 in Podgorica, after leaving the newspaper's editorial office. To this day, the prosecution and the police have not determined who shot Jovanović and why.

"The conviction of an accomplice, Damir Mandić, was for a long time a mask for the police and the judiciary that they had finished their work, and let's also remember the deception of the public that the murder was still a crime and that it was being investigated. As it was a decade ago, so it is now," the DNPCG announced. -a.

They pointed out that they still believe that those responsible for the ineffective investigation should be prosecuted, in whatever positions they are now.

They also appealed to politicians to "stop politically manipulating this tragedy", as well as all attacks on journalists. "Most of them show every day that they do not know the importance of freedom of expression and that they do not do their job to protect it," said the DPNCG.

They remind that "Dan" during the editing of Duško Jovanović wrote about numerous corrupt deals, about the connection between organized crime and parts of the state.

"In particular, he thoroughly transmitted content related to organized cigarette smuggling and his connection with parts of the government at the time and some of its officials. Hence the suspicion that there was never a will to investigate his murder," the statement added.

The DPNCG reminds that the former head of the Podgorica Security Center, Milan Vujanović, told two years ago that Vesna Medenica, as the supreme state prosecutor, obstructed the investigation into the murder of the editor-in-chief of "Dana".

"According to his words, Medenica knew from the beginning about the official note with the confession of Damir Mandić, the only one convicted of that murder today, but did not react and immediately sent the prosecutor to CB Podgorica. As it turned out later, he added, that was the key thing that influenced that the murder of Jovanović was never fully elucidated. The official note was made in the CB Podgorica on June 5, 2004, just a few days after the murder of the editor of 'Dana'. In it, Mandić described in detail the role of Vuk Vulević in that crime, but that Beranac was never prosecuted for that," the statement concludes.
