The Center for Civil Liberties (CEGAS) called on all levels of government, especially the Government, the State Prosecutor's Office, the police and the municipality of Nikšić, to condemn the chanting of Sutjeska fans and to take specific measures within their jurisdiction to suppress hate speech.

The non-governmental organization (NGO) stated in a statement that they strongly condemn the nationalist outpouring of hatred chanting "knife, wire, Podgorica".

"Fans of the Sutjeska Football Club horrified the Montenegrin public by alluding to the genocide in Srebrenica," CEGAS said.

As they stated, celebrating the crime in which over eight thousand Bosniaks, including children, were killed is an unimaginable shame.

"We call on all levels of government, especially the Government, the State Prosecutor's Office, the Police Directorate and the municipality of Nikšić, to condemn this wrongdoing and take concrete measures within their jurisdiction to suppress hate speech, primarily in terms of criminal and misdemeanor liability," the statement said.

CEGAS said that, unfortunately, unpleasant incidents are repeated frequently and require a serious strategic response from the institutions.

Hate speech, as stated by that NGO, is a criminal offense in Montenegro and must not be ignored.

"Violence begins with verbal violence and one must not wait for more disastrous consequences," the statement said.

CEGAS called on citizens to condemn and resist such behavior and by personal example contribute to good interpersonal relations between everyone living in Montenegro.
