The Yugoslav Communist Party of Montenegro OK Nikšić and representatives of SOBNOR laid a wreath in front of the Ljub Čupić monument yesterday, on the occasion of Statehood Day. The president of the veterans' organization, Tomislav Bulajić, recalled the importance of July 13. On that date, in 1878, Montenegro became an independent state, while in 1941, a great national uprising took place.
"The chroniclers say that the Thirteenth of July Uprising was the first armed uprising and resistance of a people to fascist enslavement. Unfortunately, we have to state that neither this uprising nor the war after it could have passed without betrayal and the Fifth Columnists who caused a lot of harm to the national liberation movement and its struggle for general liberation from fascism," said Jovan Vujović, a member of the municipal committee of Nikšić communists.
For the crimes committed, our people would say that we should forgive, he added, but not forget. That's why we remember July 12 and 13 equally.
"On the first date, the declaration on the accession of Montenegro was signed under the auspices of Mussolini's fascist Italy, and on the second day, it was an expression of the people's quick reaction and expression of indignation towards the signed document," Vujović added.
As he pointed out, the people in those days gave heroic resistance to the Italian occupation, but also reprimanded domestic treason.
