The mobile traffic lights on the Bojana bridge, spectacularly announced before the May Day holidays as a solution to the problem that has been burdening traffic towards the island for a long time due to the existence of only one roadway, are not in operation even though the peak season is underway.
Leart Taipi, the secretary of the secretariat for communal and housing activities in the municipality of Ulcinj, whose responsibility is the traffic lights on the bridge, did not respond to the messages and questions of "Vijesti" as to why the traffic lights are not working and since when.
President of the Municipality of Ulcinj Omer Bajraktari on his Facebook profile at the end of April, he wrote that traffic lights will facilitate traffic before the start and during the season. He confirmed to "Vijesti" that the mobile traffic lights were installed by the Municipality.
According to unofficial information, the traffic lights do not work because the battery has worn out or broken, so they must be connected to electricity. Another interlocutor said that the problem is in "stelvanja", which makes the repair more complicated.
The bridge was opened for traffic in 1984, at the time of the expansion of tourism in Ulcinj. He consigned to history the legendary rafts that until then brought guests to Ada and cruised between the banks of the river exactly where the bridge is now.
The arc of the clumsily designed bridge is such that a driver from one side at the beginning cannot see if a vehicle from the other side has already started to meet him. Only one carriageway therefore often led to awkward situations, i.e. verbal and physical confrontations, when, due to the impossibility of passing, vehicles would meet in the middle of the bridge and none of the drivers was willing to give way and turn back.
This is evidenced by the recent event, just a few days after the traffic lights were put into operation, when a serious incident took place in the middle of the bridge - in a physical confrontation, two young men from Ulcinj suffered serious injuries. Two men from Podgorica were then suspected by the police of having committed the criminal offense of violent behavior combined with the criminal offense of grievous bodily harm on the night between April 30 and May 1.
"Vijesti" was told by the police at the time that the incident happened after people from Ulcinj and Podgorica met in their cars on a narrow bridge, and no one wanted to go back in their vehicle to allow the other to pass.
In the video provided to "Vijesti", two attackers were seen beating a man with their feet, fists and a bat.
