The last quantities of contaminated soil from the Bijela shipyard were exported to Belgium on Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced.
It is reported that 6.769 tons of contaminated soil were exported under an export permit issued by the EPA.
"The remaining activities concerning the export of contaminated bags are ongoing, for which a license to import to Portugal has been secured," said the Agency.
They said that they expect this activity to be successfully implemented by the end of next month, which will formally complete the remediation project of the Bijela shipyard location.
The Agency reminded that all quantities of grit were exported at the beginning of February last year.
As they stated, from the point of view of Chapter 27, with the completion of the remediation of that location, significant progress was made in the implementation and enforcement of the acquis of the European Union.
"We emphasize the importance of remediation in terms of control and prevention of further pollution of the water area," the announcement states.
The Agency said that the remediation and decontamination of the location in Bijela is important not only for Herceg Novi, but for the entire coast and Montenegro, due to the valorization of that area and future investment - the construction of facilities for the overhaul of yachts and mega yachts, which will also lead to new employment.
The remediation of the Bijela shipyard location, as they stated, is part of the "Industrial waste management and cleaning" project, which is being implemented with a World Bank loan.
"Through the project, the implementation of which is in charge of the EPA, the problems of "black" ecological points are solved, namely the Bijela shipyard, the ash and slag landfill Maljevac and the Gradac flotation tailings, the preparation of technical documentation for the rehabilitation of the red mud pool and the solid waste landfill at the KAP location , and work is also being done to resolve the issue of the treatment of hazardous and non-hazardous waste," the announcement says.
The Agency stated that the work on the remediation of the Gradac flotation tailings pond and the Maljevac landfill, i.e. the reclamation of Cassette II, the relocation of the Paleški stream, the rehabilitation of the landslide, the construction of a new sedimentation tank and the rehabilitation of steps 4 and 5, were completed in the second half of 2021.
