The Žabljak committee of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) called on the Government, the Ministry of Ecology, Spatial Planning and Urbanism, as well as the Forestry Administration to react as soon as possible and protect the Durmitor National Park and that municipality from "malicious criminals" towards the natural resources of Žabljak.
They said that, if there is no urgent intervention by the competent institutions, they will be forced to undertake "certain activities" and implement "respect for the law as prescribed by the valid positive legal norms" in Montenegro.
Cutting down the forest by, as they claim in the DPS, party activists of Democrats and the Durmitor initiative, constituents of the local government in Žabljak, causes complete devastation of the Durmitor National Park, but also commits a kind of crime against nature.
"Despite the fact that the Durmitor National Park is under UNESCO protection and that the exploitation of the forest from this jewel of our municipality is strictly prohibited, we unfortunately witness the almost daily endangerment of its landscape beauty and the collapse of its biodiversity," the announcement states.
It is obvious, they believe in the DPS, that the local government not only does not care about this fact, but "facilitates such actions by allowing party eligible people and people close to them to carry out such illegal actions".
"We give our full support to non-governmental activists who are fighting for nature protection and preservation of Durmitor National Park, because it is certain that if this situation continues, desolation and natural disaster will follow the forests of Durmitor National Park," said the DPS.
