Psychiatrist Branka Purlija said, on the occasion of September 10 - World Suicide Prevention Day, that effective suicide prevention requires cooperation between different experts: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and educational institutions. Also, he emphasizes, the inclusion of the community, family and friends in the support process is crucial.
"Suicide is one of the most serious and tragic topics that psychiatrists often encounter. Suicide is one of the outcomes caused by a combination of mental pain, mental disorder and social circumstances. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, the prevention of which is one of the key challenges in the field mental health. Although it is difficult to identify a single cause of suicide, there are many known risk factors. These include previous suicide attempts, family history of suicide, mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, substance abuse, isolation and stigmatization. In addition, sociocultural, economic and environmental factors can also play a role," stated Purlija, as reported from the Podgorica Health Center.
In addition to mental disorders, she points out, social circumstances such as job loss, divorce or the death of a loved one can increase the risk of suicide. "Psychiatrists work with patients to identify and process this pain through therapy and medication. We strive to understand the whole picture of the patient's life in order to provide comprehensive support," he adds.
Purlija points out that early identification of symptoms and warning signs can be crucial in the prevention of suicide.
"People who are thinking about suicide often show changes in behavior, withdraw from social interactions, express feelings of hopelessness, or verbalize their suicidal intentions. Psychiatrists and other health professionals have a key role in recognizing these signs and providing appropriate intervention. Regular check-ups, mental health education and destigmatization of mental disorders can help reduce the number of suicides," she stated.
For many, he notes, the feeling of mental pain can be unbearable. "Many people who are thinking about suicide feel trapped in their thoughts and emotions. It is important that people talk about their feelings. Sometimes just giving someone the opportunity to express themselves can be crucial in preventing suicide."
She reminded that experts encourage open communication about these difficult topics.
"Effective suicide prevention requires cooperation between different experts: psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and educational institutions. It is also crucial to involve the community, family and friends in the support process. Raising awareness about suicide and risk factors is essential," said Purlija.
Educational campaigns, she said, can help demystify mental illness, reduce stigma and empower individuals to seek help.
"Suicide is a complex and multidimensional problem that requires comprehensive interventions. Psychiatry, as a key discipline in the understanding and treatment of mental disorders, plays a central role in suicide prevention. Through a combination of early detection, a multidisciplinary approach and education, we can make significant steps towards reducing the number of suicides." , it concludes.
