The International Day of Older Persons, which is celebrated on October 1, was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 14, 1990, with the aim of emphasizing the importance of adapting the living environment to the needs and abilities of the third-age residents.
"Today, the aging population represents one of humanity's greatest successes, but also one of the greatest public health challenges. It is necessary to point out that the number of people over 65 years old is increasing and that this trend continues, on the one hand due to the declining birth rate, and on the other hand due to the increase in life expectancy. Currently, about 700 million people in the world are over 65 years old, and it is estimated that by 2050, that number will amount to two billion, which will represent over 20 percent of the world's population," the local administration announced.
