A trend of increasing air temperature was recorded in the municipalities of Nikšić and Plužine

The municipalities of Nikšić and Plužine, based on data from meteorological stations, have a trend of increasing air temperature, the number of tropical days and nights, longer heat waves, the occurrence of heavy rainfall, a decrease in the number of days with precipitation, icy and frosty days and an increase in dry periods.

This was said at the training organized by the Society of Young Ecologists of Nikšić (DMEN) on the topic "Climate changes and their impact on water resources in the municipalities of Nikšić and Plužine".

The lecture was held by Luka Mitrović, MSc, who, among other things, said that due to global warming, the climate has changed in the entire area of ​​Montenegro, and that the change is particularly pronounced in the continental and mountainous parts.

According to the press release, Mitrović spoke about the richness of Nikšić's waters, the fact that the amount of precipitation in Nikšić polje is high and is close to 2000 mm, about the characteristics of the air temperature in Nikšić and the growing trend of extreme maximum and minimum temperatures in the city under Trebjesom, the deviation of the average annual temperature from the climatological norm... He also referred to the water resources sector in the area of ​​the municipality of Plužine and their sensitivity, and pointed out that one of the most significant climate risks for the area of ​​that municipality are increasingly frequent and long-lasting hydrological droughts, which directly reflect on protection and use of water resources. Average air temperature in Plužine, in the comparative period 1961-1990. and 1991-2020. increased by 1,2 degrees.

"The aim of the training, which brought together representatives of the local administration from Nikšić, the non-governmental sector, the scientific community and students from the Faculty of Geography, was to better familiarize themselves with the challenges brought by climate change and their specific impact on water resources," said Miodrag Karadžić from DMEN- a.

The training was carried out as part of the project "Better understanding of water due to climate change" which the Nikšić Association of Young Ecologists is implementing as part of the Regional Program of Local Democracy in the Western Balkans ReLOaD 2, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in partnership with 15 local governments in Montenegro, divided into five clusters, among which is the "Together Nikšić and Plužine" cluster.
