The project "Circular Economy in Eco-Schools (E-SPACE)" was launched with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of the circular economy and its connection with the global goals of sustainable development, including the fight against climate change, the preservation of biodiversity and the reduction of environmental pollution.

Acquiring knowledge about sustainable development is the key to the success of the Montenegrin education system.

This was said by the acting director of the Institute of Education, Irena Pavlović, at the "Circular Economy in Eco-Schools" conference.

"The Eco-school program significantly contributes to improving the quality of teaching and learning in the field of education for sustainable development. This is how children and young people are motivated to take an active role in environmental protection," said Pavlović.

Ambassador of Germany in Montenegro Peter Felten said that it is necessary to change the approach towards the limited resources of our planet.

"This change can only succeed if we develop awareness among the youngest in our society that we must act responsibly towards the natural environment," said Felten.

He congratulated the principals, as well as the teachers of the Eco-School, adding that with dedication and innovative methods, they clarified the concept of sustainable development more clearly to the students.

"I am glad that the German Embassy can support the program with its small contribution. With the help of micro-recycling devices funded by the embassy together with 3D printers, schoolgirls can learn many things about nature and how we can save it," he said, adding that we have to be more careful with waste.

He assessed that "the whole world must have a special approach to the planet Earth, so as not to destroy it with its careless behavior".

Felten said that everything depends on the political will and actors to develop systems for recycling and cleaning water.

"Actors who thoughtlessly throw waste around should be severely punished. An ecological country such as Montenegro is sometimes made to look like a big waste dump. It is important to develop awareness among citizens to avoid waste, but also to recycle more," he said. ambassador of Germany in Montenegro.

Kankaraš: It is important to teach children that natural resources are not endless, but have an "expiry date".

The secretary of the National Council for Sustainable Development, Aneta Kankaraš, explained what activities are being implemented in order to realize the National Strategy for Sustainable Development.

"For more than 15 years, we have been dealing with the topics of sustainable development. You know that wars and major global crises affect our environment. This project is important because it is an example of good practice that will help our younger generation to move from a linear to a circular economy in the near future. Young we included in this topic for this very reason. We have a Council for Children's Rights in the Government of Montenegro that deals with children. In order to implement strategic documents, everyone must be involved, even the youngest," said Kankaraš.

The secretary of the National Council for Sustainable Development assessed that it is necessary to change education in Montenegro.

"Education for sustainable development will allow our society to progress. It is important to teach children that natural resources are not endless, but have a 'lifetime'... Circular economy advocates the use of recycling, reducing consumption, waste and reducing the emission of waste gases. You know is that larger amounts of waste from more countries travel through the oceans," said Kankaraš, adding that waste should be a resource.

Čabrilo: 47 schools were awarded the Green Flag and a certificate of Eco-school status

Eco-school program implementation coordinator Nevena Čabrilo presented the results of the E-space project.

"Eco-school has been implemented since 2016. The Foundation for a Sustainable Environment gathers around 74 countries in the world. During this period, 47 schools were awarded the Green Flag and a certificate of the acquired Eco-school title. Montenegro is one of the eight countries involved in the improvement project circular economy (E-SPACE)," said Čabrilo, adding that 14 schools, instead of 10, applied for the program.

She pointed out that the cooperation with the German Embassy was particularly important to her, mainly because of the children.

"They have acquired knowledge from digital competences. Anyone who has used a 3D printer knows that it is not the easiest to use," she said.

Čabrilo pointed out that the main goals of the training that the teachers went through were the exchange of experiences in the implementation of the circular economy program of the Eco-School of Montenegro, networking/improving cooperation between Montenegrin schools, raising the awareness of the local community through finding creative urban solutions in the local community and creating modules for classes that encourage unique digital and design solutions.

The institutions that received the Green Flag award are: private preschool institution (PPU) "Kockica (Podgorica), PPU "Maša" (Podgorica), PPU "Čarli Čaplin" (Podgorica), PPU "Svetionik" (Bar), Public preschool institution ( JPU) "Đina Vrbica" (Podgorica), Educational Unit (VJ) "Dragan Radulović" (Podgorica) and Elementary School (OS) "Vuk Karadžić" (Podgorica).

Special recognition for the continuous implementation of the Eco-school program was given to Elementary School "Kekec" from Sutomore, JPU "Đina Vrbica" and VJ "Zvjezdani vrt" from Golubovac.
