There is hardly a day that some of the women from public life in Montenegro do not suffer from misogynistic or sexist speech on social networks, which is a real reflection of their position in society.

This was assessed yesterday by the institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms.

"The columnist of the portal "Aktuelno" is also faced with such harmful narratives, which are additionally accompanied by sexualized "mime" /meme/ photos. Tijana Lopičić, which the institution of the Protector strongly condemns and says that sexism, misogyny, discriminatory attitudes and patterns of behavior concern all of us, not only those who are affected at that moment", the ombudsman's announcement states.

Yesterday, the institution of the Protector reminded that, bearing in mind that sociological research in Montenegro indicates a worryingly high level of tolerance for hate speech in the media and on social networks, and with the information they receive, misogyny and sexism are unquestionably internalized. They assessed that such a situation does not inspire hope for the future.

"We must understand that it is about a standard, not speculation in the public about whether or not women should be protected from public life. In addition, the European Commission in its latest report clearly emphasizes the state's obligation to fight this with all available resources and without compromise, by strengthening the system and applying all measures, including repressive ones," the institution he manages said. Siniša Bjeković.

They concluded that in relation to such negative phenomena, which are, among other things, a reflection of the patriarchy that affects women and men, it is necessary to further raise public awareness, the reaction of competent authorities and constant education at all levels.

Last week, the Protector condemned the disrespect for other people's dignity, insults, sexist and misogynistic speech directed by several people on the Facebook social network to MP Aleksandra Vuković Kuč, which is directed only and exclusively in relation to the MP's physical appearance, i.e. her family situation.

At the time, they pointed out that sexism and misogyny on social networks are increasingly widespread phenomena, with women being disproportionately more affected, which allows for anonymity in the online space.
