The signing of a comprehensive Memorandum on Cooperation between the Special State Prosecutor's Office of Montenegro (SDT) and the Italian Prosecutor's Office for the fight against the mafia is a priority, it was concluded at today's meeting between the Minister of Justice of Montenegro, Andrej Milović, and the Ambassador of Italy to Montenegro, Andrea Marcela.
This was announced by the Public Relations Service of the Ministry of Justice.
"This cooperation, it was pointed out, would include study visits and exchanges of prosecutors, where Montenegrin prosecutors would participate in the work of prosecutors in Italy with the aim of gaining valuable experience to strengthen the fight against organized crime," the announcement states.
Milović said that Italy is recognized as one of the most important partners of Montenegro in the fight against crime and corruption.
"At the meeting, the desire for even closer cooperation was expressed, which would include visits at the highest level of relevant institutions in the field of justice and the Ministry of Justice, as well as expert exchange," the statement reads.
Milović expressed the need for Italy's support, as stated, in the establishment of the future Special Court, as well as help regarding the "anti-mafia" law on confiscation of property based on the Italian model, and in accordance with the guidelines of the European Commission.
"Mutual cooperation should be intensive in raising judicial institutions to a higher level, changing legislation and educating officials of the judicial and security sectors, it is a joint conclusion," the ministry's statement added.
Marcela proposed that this memorandum be expanded, it was announced, to become an integral part of a wider cooperation agreement, which would include Italy's support in all areas.
"She emphasized that the experience of Italy showed that the education system proved to be crucial in the effective fight against the mafia, because the struggle of institutions alone will not give results if education is not involved," it is stated.
Through these initiatives, Montenegro strives to strengthen its capacities, as added in the announcement, in combating organized crime, corruption and strengthening the rule of law, which with the support of Italy as a key ally in achieving these goals will be faster and better.
