The SafeJournalists network announced today that it is concerned about the threats of rape that were sent to female journalists from Montenegro last week.
"An unknown person sent an email to the editor of the M portal Danica Nikolić that contained threats of rape. The threats were addressed to Nikolić and her other colleagues from various media, Tamara Nikčević, Bojana Dabović, Mirka Dević and Slavica Kruščić Vasović. The case was immediately reported to the police and the prosecutor's office." stated in the SafeJournalists announcement.
From that network, they added that the Media Union of Montenegro (SMCG) warns that the threats received by female journalists are very problematic, because, as they said, this is the first time that such a massive threat has occurred in Montenegro, the target of which was only women.
"The competent authorities must react urgently in order to put an end to this phenomenon and to ensure that the perpetrator is adequately punished. In recent years, the SMCG often highlights the promptness of the police, prosecutor's offices and courts when it comes to new cases of attacks on journalists. However, journalist Danica Nikolić has been the target of threats several times and as far as we know nothing has been done, so her experience is different and we are appealing to change her name," said the president of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Radomir Kračković.
"The SafeJournalists network, which represents media professionals in the Western Balkans, joins its member SMCG and calls on the authorities to take this case seriously and urgently find the person who sent the threats and prosecute the case," the SafeJournalists network said in a statement.
They said that they would inform the relevant domestic and international actors about this case, and that they would place special emphasis on the safety of female journalists in their work.
"Every attack on journalists is an attack on the public interest, democracy and the rights of all citizens," the SafeJournalists statement concludes.
