Nikšić: Mountain rescue service marked 60 years of existence

The Mountain Rescue Service (GSS) is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and on that occasion they presented certificates of appreciation and plaques to those who in the past contributed to the work of the service, which has become synonymous with rescue in Montenegro.

The President of the Municipality of Nikšić, Marko Kovačević, congratulated the jubilee and pointed out that the members of the GSS are among the best representatives of the city, that 60 years of the service's work is a jubilee to be proud of, and he promised that the local self-government will continue to support the Mountain Rescue Service as much as possible. .

Stevan Vujičić, the only living member of the first rescue team of the Mountain Rescue Service, which was founded in 1963, thanked everyone who came to celebrate the jubilee with them.

"Thank you to the Municipality of Nikšić, and thank you also to the representatives of PSD 'Javorak' because it is our mother house. We all came from it, as well as from the Čelik society," Vujičić said.

For years, GSS had the help and support of the mountaineer Vojin Đukanović, who recalled that the alpinist, ski and speleological sections of the PSD "Javorak" were very active and achieved significant results, and that this was a society that was famous in the former Yugoslavia and from which the Mountain Service was created.

"I hope that the young generations of the GSS have matured, because today it is a Service of repute for the entire state of Montenegro," said Đukanović.

A short film about the history of the Mountain Service was shown and the anthem of the Mountain Service written by Živojin Đukanović Zvicer and a poem dedicated to them by Marinko Pavićević were read.

GSS is a member of the International Organization for Alpine Rescue - IKAR.
