The system for tracking and recording pharmaceutical products, which the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) are working on, will prevent the entry of falsified drugs into legal supply streams and enable easy insight into the data and habits of patients.
The Ministry of Health said that this was ordered at a meeting of representatives of that department and UNDP, which was held on the occasion of the creation and implementation of a system for tracking and recording pharmaceutical products (Track&Trace), as part of the project Strengthening the Health Care System in Montenegro.
It is estimated that the System for monitoring and recording pharmaceutical products will facilitate decision-making aimed at health care and determining the general state of health of the nation.
It is stated that the Ministry of Health and UNDP, with consulting support, worked intensively on fulfilling the prerequisites for the development of the Track&Trace system.
It is recalled that, as the amount of falsified medicines on the world market grew from year to year, the European Parliament and the European Commission adopted the Directive on falsified medicines in 2011, which entered into force in February 2019.
"The directive obliges participants in the drug supply chain to introduce security features, which in practice mean that every single serial number of a box of prescription drugs, including in the future in Montenegro, will be entered and available in the European system for verifying the authenticity of drugs. as well as in the national database," the statement said.
It is added that this will enable verification of the origin and authenticity of the medicine at any time.
"Taking into account the fact that Montenegro is a candidate for EU membership, which is followed by the obligation to join the European system for drug verification, the Ministry of Health and UNDP in Montenegro initiated activities on the development and implementation of the Track&Trace national system," said the Ministry of Health. .
The State Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Aleksandar Sekulić, emphasized the partnership of UNDP and that department in the digitization of the health care system and assessed that the long-term implementation of the project gives significant results, makes the system more efficient, with the goal of better health and protection of the citizens of Montenegro.
According to the director general of the Directorate for Projects, Innovations and Health Tourism in Luka Đukanović, the system will provide an important control mechanism, but also, what is more important, a better insight into the health of citizens, their habits and help decision makers to make better and better policies in the field of health.
It is estimated that the system for monitoring and recording pharmaceutical products will provide data exchange between the registers of relevant actors in the system, which will ensure the safety of medicines.
It is added that the constant exchange of data will enable proactive management of the state of medicines, in the sense of automatic notifications about their deficit, but also better planning of the budget for the procurement of medicines and medical devices.
"In the long term, this system will provide better consumption analytics for several important parameters, which will further empower the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Public Health to create policies based on accurate and up-to-date data," the announcement concludes.
