The municipality of Mojkovac has announced an international competition for the conceptual solution of the architectural reinterpretation of the old fortification and mining settlement in Brskov.
The ultimate goal, the President of the Municipal Assembly (SO) Marko Janketić told the "News", is the construction of a replica of medieval Brskov in realistic dimensions.
The conceptual solution, explained in the competition task, should also be "some kind of survey work that would show different visions of the beginning of urbanization" in our area, with the application of existing data and a partial "revival" of a long-forgotten time that is very significant for history, tradition and development of Mojkovac.
A full-scale replica of the mining settlement, given that the original location is insufficiently accessible, would be built elsewhere.
The reinterpretation of the old mining fortification and settlement, with the application of the results of known archaeological sites and written data, is planned on a location with an area of about 35 thousand square meters, and the narrowest location on which it can be built is about 13,4 square meters in the scope of the urban development of the PUP Mojkovac. According to the planning documents, this space is intended for public and social facilities, narrow purpose, sports, recreation and tourism...
According to the Municipality, the realization of that project would bring many benefits to Mojkovac.
"By building a reinterpreted old Brskov, an 'open-air' museum would be formed, numerous cultural activities would be realized and organic products from the Mojkovac region would be presented. The theme park should also be adapted to modern tourist needs in terms of the function and equipment of the location. And just as the medieval squares represented the factors and mirror of the development of the medieval state, the reinterpretation should attract more tourists by activating the theme park in question, and promote the further development of Mojkovac".
The project, as specified in the documentation accompanying the competition, should simultaneously enable the demonstration of the entire process of extracting and processing ore, from mining shafts - pits, through crushing and grinding, to smelting and use in the forge.
"For all these sub-projects, it is necessary to involve an archaeologist who knows these areas well. The future complex in the form of a theme park should be available to both citizens and tourists all 12 months and could be among the first in this region to offer such programs to visitors and the general public," the tender task reads.
According to what is written in New knowledge about medieval Brskov, aurora Miloš M. Živanović (Center for Conservation and Archeology of Montenegro), "Brskov's appearance on the historical stage played a key role in the further development of medieval Serbia". The reason for its economic importance in the country, as the author notes, "certainly the mineral wealth found in that inaccessible mountain climate of the northern branches of Bjelasica".
In the competition assignment, the authors were suggested to use the information that the "process of urbanization" was proceeding rapidly from the middle of the 12th century, and reached its peak in the first half of the 15th century. A significant contribution was made by the people of Dubrovnik and the Saxons, the carriers of trade and mining. According to data from the Dubrovnik archive, "Brskovo, shortly after the arrival of the Saxons, became the most famous mine and square in what was then Serbia in the XNUMXth century". Not only silver and copper were traded in it, but also various other products. According to some opinions, it was also a square where agricultural products were traded (wine, food, fabric...).
The competition for conceptual solutions is open until April 5, and they will be decided by a seven-member jury composed of archaeologists, historians, architects... The first prize is 13.000 euros, the second 7.000, and the third 3.000. It is planned that two conceptual solutions will be purchased for 1.000 euros each.
