Work on digging the mouth of Port Milena, which began a few days ago, will create the conditions for fishermen to be able to sail out to sea in boats after almost four months.
The Municipality of Ulcinj provided money for the execution of works and dredging of the estuary in the amount of eight thousand euros.
"We paid the money to the Fishermen's Association, which is now responsible for that work. The excavator is there and we expect that the work will be completed in a few dinars", the Secretary for Investments told "Vijesta" Minir Karamanaga.
The problem with the silting up of the Port Milena estuary has been going on for decades, and as it was previously determined in the professional expertise, a group of experts led by the professor of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Belgrade, Dr. Dragan Rudić, continuous dredging is necessary in order not to stop the flow of water between the sea and the channel. They had in mind that the Ulcinj Saltworks, at the beginning of its business a little more than 90 years ago, when it used to deliver salt to the wharf by barge, bought an excavator specifically for the needs of regular dredging of the estuary.
Ivo Knezevic from the Fishermen's Association confirmed that the works will be completed quickly and that the Municipality, the Maritime Administration and the Water Administration came to their aid.
"I don't know how long this will last, but I think that in a year at the latest, dredging will be necessary again so that we don't end up in a situation where the estuary is filled up and we have to wait this long," Knežević said.
On the filling of the estuary, except for the marine factor, as claimed by the Ulcinj ecologist Dzelal Hodzic, the condition in the channel is also significantly affected.
"There is not enough flow due to the usurpation of the banks, especially at the mouth itself. A big problem is also under the old bridge near Otranto, where there are the remains of the previous one, which nobody removed when they were demolishing it. The fact that the canal is a waste water collector is another story," Hodžić told "Vijesta".
"Vijesti" announced yesterday that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the Elaboration on Environmental Impact Assessment for the fishing port, which is planned to be built on the eastern part of Cape Đerana in Ulcinj, just above the mouth of Port Milena. .
Ulcinj should certainly have a fishing port, but without going into the analysis of the report, the question arises about the order of priorities - whether Port Milena, its estuary and its flow should be taken care of first.
