Working conditions for journalists in Montenegro are worrisome, and even after two decades, the murder of the editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper "Dan" has not been solved, warned the Council of Europe (CoE) report "Media Freedom in Europe".
It is an annual report on media freedom, which SE works with the partners of the "Safety of Journalists" platform.
"The report highlights that the main issues undermining media freedom, including threats and intimidation, are detention, restrictive legislation, lawsuits, media capture and attacks on journalists. In 2023, the platform's partners published 285 warnings about serious threats or attacks on journalists and media freedom in Europe," the report states and specifies that these are various threats, pressures and restrictions under which journalists have to do their work.
The report emphasizes, among other things, that the freedom of the media and the digital security of journalists "are still threatened by the continuous use of technology to monitor journalists and media actors, and no one takes responsibility for such reported abuses."
SE General Secretary Marija Pejčinović Burić said that the report "Platform for the Safety of Journalists" shows the increasing risks and obstacles that journalists and the media face in Europe.
"We need decisive action by states to protect journalists and to counter threats to media freedom, such as lawsuits for abuse and illegal surveillance. In order to improve the safety of journalists, member states should show a strong commitment to respect media freedom standards and promote the Council of Europe's 'Journalists Matter' campaign at the national level.
