Stray dogs on the streets of Bjelopolje will become a thing of the past by the beginning of May, when a temporary shelter for abandoned dogs will be opened in that municipality, said Muradif Grbović, director of the company "Komunalno Lim".
Bijelo Polje, like most other municipalities in the north, is faced with a huge problem of stray dogs, which are not under supervision due to the lack of shelters for dogs, and represent a health, safety, social and environmental problem.
According to the Government's decision, that Municipality formed a mixed commission to solve this problem at the end of January this year.
As Grbović explained, there are currently hundreds of stray dogs in the territory of that municipality.
"That way, they will have a more humane treatment and our fellow citizens will be protected. The dogs will be examined, vaccinated, fed, so it will be much better for them," Grbović said.
The company "Komunalno Lim" will finance the asylum together with the local self-government, and the disposal facility with accompanying facilities, water and electricity already exists, he said, reminding that strays roam the streets in packs, posing a serious problem for people's safety.
He repeated that the shelter in Berane, with which they have a contract, does not accept dogs due to lack of accommodation capacity, adding that this is a problem for the entire north.
"For several years, the municipality took a plot of land in Ramčina for the construction of a dog shelter, but we encountered a lack of understanding from the locals, so in cooperation with the local self-government and the state, we will find a long-term or permanent solution to this problem," he said, emphasizing that for now, the location of the "Franca" farm in Dobrinje, near which there are no houses or buildings, is under consideration.
"Until then, we have a couple of locations, and the most serious location is the 'Franca' farm in Dobrinje," Grbović said.
At the end of January, the Municipality of Bijelopolska formed a commission to solve the problem of the growth of the population of stray dogs, which, in addition to the Municipality's officials, consists of members of local services, as well as representatives of veterinary and hunting organizations.
Last year, the Municipal Company and the Municipality jointly paid 134.000 euros in compensation to citizens due to dog attacks.
On December 29 last year, the government gave a recommendation to local governments to prepare local plans for dog control by the end of the first quarter of this year.
