The Vice-President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Zdenka Popović, today laid a wreath at the place where Duško Jovanović was killed, the Parliament announced.
The announcement states that Jovanović was a brave journalist who lost his life twenty years ago, and whose dedication to truth and justice left an indelible mark on journalism.
"By laying a wreath, I want to send a clear message that we will not forget Duško Jovanović, and that the perpetrators and those who commissioned this crime will be brought to justice. His courage and determination to tell the truth, even at the cost of his life, are values that we must protect and cherish. The memory of Duška Jovanović obliges us to continue the fight for free and independent journalism, because that is the foundation of every democratic society," said Popović.
"Each anniversary of his death reminds us of the price that journalists can pay for freedom of speech and the truth. That is why it is crucial that we ensure the safety and support of journalists who face challenges and threats every day. We must be determined to protect their rights and create an environment in which they can to work freely and without fear. Duško Jovanović gave his life for the truth and it is our duty to fight for the values he represented. Montenegro can only be free, she concluded.
