We appeal that the works at the location of the Old Airport, on the roundabout next to the pump, be stopped immediately because they are directly threatening the nesting colony of barn swallows, said the Center for Research and Study of Birds (CZIP).
"This strictly protected species of swallow builds its nests in holes it digs in the ground by placing a pit with a nest at the end of the tunnel. According to the information we received from the citizens, construction work is underway at the mentioned location, which threatens the nesting colony. We informed about this information. environmental inspection and we demand an immediate response. We also appeal to the contractors to immediately stop the work until they submit and receive the conditions for further performance of the work from the Environmental Protection Agency, and in view of the newly created circumstances," the announcement reads.
They reminded that this is not the first case of barn swallows nesting on construction sites, "and a few years ago we had a situation where a decision was made to temporarily ban work on the construction site until the birds leave the nest. We expect an immediate reaction and the same epilogue in this case. Also we call on the company HD Laković, which is building a new facility at this location, to be responsible towards nature and stop further destruction of the nest."
"According to the Law on Nature Protection, in Article 87, it is clearly "prohibited to kill or catch, move, destroy or remove nests of birds, even if they are empty, eggs and disturbing them, especially during the feeding of birds and during breeding" as well as in Article 91 it is forbidden to "damage or destroy their developmental forms, nests or litters, as well as their breeding or resting areas", we hereby send an initiative for inspection with the aim of temporarily banning work on the construction site", they concluded.
